Red Cross Names Limestone College Community Partner of the Year

imageIn accepting the Piedmont Chapter of the American Red Cross's Community Partner of the Year award for Limestone College, President Walt Griffin noted that Limestone's involvement impacts not only the community, but the college students as well. "When they are using their talents for service," Griffin explained, "it not only gives them a sense of purpose, but the lessons will stay with them, we hope, for the rest of their lives."

The announcement and award presentation was made at a recent luncheon at the Spartanburg Marriott held for the Red Cross's local volunteers, staff and community partners. The Piedmont Chapter represents Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union counties.

Limestone assists the Red Cross in every program area including health and safety, prevention and response, fund raising and disaster services. Limestone Social Work Professor Tim Hanshaw is a Red Cross advisory board member and the only Cherokee County Red-Cross-trained mental health provider.

During the 2008-2009 academic year, Limestone assisted the Red Cross by sponsoring four college blood drives, providing areas for campus health fairs, allowing the use of the swimming pool for lifeguard training, and conducting a Christmas angel toy drive. Several of the Limestone athletic teams assisted with the "Taste of Cherokee" banquet, the Christmas parade, the Peach Festival parade, and the American Red Cross Kids' Day.
