Professor Honored by South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Group

Gabe Stoeppler

Gabe Stoeppler, associate professor of accounting, at Limestone College, will be presented with the 2010 Excellence in Teaching award from South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Inc. (SCICU)

Stoeppler has been a member of Limestone College's business and economics faculty since 1990.  Currently serving as associate professor of accounting, he chaired the college's Department of Business, Economics and International Studies for 10 years. A certified public accountant in South Carolina, Stoeppler earned his master's in professional accounting from Clemson University, his master's of business administration from the University of Dallas and his bachelor of arts in history and economics from City University of New York.

Stoeppler is also a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church, active in the Kairos Prison Ministry and a board member for the Foothills Emmaus Community, a Christian leadership program.

"Gabe is a fine example of linking practical experience with classroom instruction," said Dr. Walt Griffin, president of Limestone. "His more than 25 years of industrial management and executive experience - including his tenure as president of a Tennessee retailing company and division general manager for a Fortune 500 publishing company - is invaluable to his students."

Each of the 20 member institutions of the SCICU consortium selects one faculty member each year to receive the award, which includes a professional development stipend for the professor.  Each recipient is chosen by his or her institution according to rigorous criteria.  The most important characteristic of the nominees is their demonstration of the highest standards in teaching methods that encourage students to strive for excellence in their studies and pursuits.

SCICU was established in 1953 with the primary mission of promoting independent higher education in South Carolina. SCICU seeks to advance independent higher education through fundraising, scholarships, research, and by facilitating collaborative activities among the 20 member institutions, which educate nearly 33,000 students each year.
