The event, which is open to all Cherokee County youngsters from preschool age to fifth grade, will take place on the Limestone front lawn. The Cherokee County Literacy Association, which is co-sponsoring the event with the Limestone College Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC), is providing the books as well as a limited number of croc-style Skechers shoes to give away to participants.
Through their donations, the Limestone faculty and staff will provide Easter eggs and candy; participants need only bring an Easter basket and an appetite for fun.
"According to recent statistics, nearly 25% of the Cherokee County population cannot read," said Limestone senior Jessie Wilkes, a psychology and criminal justice major from Darlington and member of SALC. She also volunteers nearly 20 hours every week as a tutor for the Boys and Girls Club of Cherokee County helping youngsters to reach their reading potential.
"Through the Easter egg hunt, we'll be putting books directly into the hands of the young children, which we hope will get them excited about reading. At the very least, the books should make it easier for their parents to read to them," Jessie continued.
